Orioles 2, Mariners 1 (12)
Zach Britton and Jason Vargas pitched to a scoreless draw through nine innings before the runs poured out in the 12th as Brandon League melted down in a save opportunity and handed the host Baltimore Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
After the Mariners manufactured a run off Jim Johnson (2-1) in the top of the 12th, Seattle turned the ball over to League (0-3) for the bottom of the frame. The righthander allowed a leadoff single to Derrek Lee and then hit two batters to load the bases.
Luis Rodriguez made a diving catch on a line drive for the first out but J.J. Hardy punched a single up the middle through the drawn-in infield to plate the tying and winning runs.
The rookie Britton worked the first nine innings for the Orioles, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out five. The lefthander threw 108 pitches - 76 for strikes - and induced 12 groundballs in the longest outing of his young career.
Vargas matched him through nine, surrendering seven hits while walking one and punching out four. He was removed after having thrown 101 pitches.
