Mariners 3, Orioles 2
Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Seattle Mariners to a dramatic 3-2 victory over the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.
Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie was cruising along until Ichiro Suzuki reached on Guthrie’s two-out error while trying to catch a ball at first base. Brendan Ryan followed with a single before Smoak hammered a three-run shot well over the right-field fence to power Seattle to its 11th win in 13 games.
Brandon League struck out two in the ninth for his American League-leading 15th save to help send Baltimore to its fifth straight defeat.
Baltimore led 2-0 before the collapse. The Orioles’ first run crossed the plate in the sixth inning when Robert Andino scored as Nick Markakis grounded into a double play.
Matt Wieters boosted the lead to 2-0 in the seventh with a leadoff homer to right.
Guthrie (2-7) allowed just five hits and struck out a season-best nine in addition to allowing the three unearned runs in the eighth.
Chris Ray (2-1) got the victory with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief against his former team. Mariners starter Erik Bedard gave up two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. The former Oriole struck out seven and walked two.
Adam Jones had two hits for Baltimore.
