Orioles 2, Mariners 1: Jones' homer, great catch lead Baltimore
Adam Jones homered into the upper deck in left field in the eighth inning to provide the Baltimore Orioles with a 2-1 victory over the host Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Jones’ homer off Jamey Wright (1-2) broke a 1-1 tie and helped Baltimore snap a five-game losing streak. Jones had three hits and is 13-for-22 (.591) against Seattle this
season. He also robbed Miguel Olivo of extra bases with a sensational
back-to-the-plate, leaping catch against the wall.
J.J. Hardy also homered for Baltimore, which handed Seattle just its third loss in 14 games.
Left-hander Brian Matusz made his first start of the season for the Orioles after suffering a rib injury in late March. The 2008 first-round pick was sharp, allowing just one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Kevin Gregg got the final three outs for his ninth save.
The only run Seattle scored against Matusz was in the second inning when Jack Wilson singled home Olivo.
Jim Johnson (4-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for Baltimore.
Mariners rookie Michael Pineda struck out seven and gave up one run and six hits in seven innings before giving way to Wright.
