Vernon Wells broke open a close game with his ninth-inning grand slam, and Ervin Santana cruised through 7 2/3 innings as the Los Angeles Angels opened their 10-game road trip with a 6-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.
Santana (5-8) won his first road game since April 29, and Hisanori Takahashi retired the final four batters for his first season save and ninth in his career.
Maicer Izturis and Torii Hunter doubled in runs in the seventh for the Angels, who snapped a six-game skid to the Orioles.
The Orioles ended a 16-inning scoreless streak with J.J. Hardy’s run-scoring single in the eighth off Santana, who allowed one run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Orioles starter Alfredo Simon (2-3) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three over 6 2/3 innings.
