White Sox 5, Rays 1
Edwin Jackson struck out 13 over eight strong innings, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 5-1 home win over winless Tampa Bay on Thursday afternoon.
Jackson (2-0) allowed just four hits and kept the Rays off the scoreboard until Reid Brignac singled home a run in the eighth inning. The 13 strikeouts set a White Sox record for most batters fanned in a home opener.
A two-run double by Alex Rios in the first inning gave the White Sox (4-2) all the offense they would need against the anemic Rays. Paul Konerko added an RBI single off David Price (0-2) in the third inning, and Chicago got a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Juan Pierre capped a 3-for-5 afternoon with an RBI single for the White Sox, while four other Chicago players collected two hits apiece.
