Tigers 9, White Sox 0
Brad Penny allowed only one hit over seven shutout innings as Detroit cruised to a 9-0 victory over the visiting Chicago White Sox on Saturday afternoon.
Penny (1-2), who walked two, struck out three and hit a batter in 95 pitches, entered the game with an ERA of 8.44 but lowered that by more than two runs. He held Chicago hitless until Brent Morel reached on an infield single with one out in the sixth inning, and he never let a runner advance past second base. The White Sox finished with just five hits, leaving the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
Meanwhile, the Tigers broke open a scoreless game in the fourth with five runs against Chicago starter Edwin Jackson (2-2). Ryan Raburn singled home a run and came in on a two-run triple by Alex Avila. Brandon Inge followed with an RBI single and later scored on a fielder's choice.
Detroit chased Jackson with three more runs in the sixth inning and added another in the eighth against Jeff Gray. Eight different Tigers had at least one hit, led by Avila's 3-for-4 day. Jackson was tagged for eight runs and 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
