Tigers 4, White Sox 3
Carlos Guillen's first RBI of the season provided the difference as Detroit avoided being swept to start the second half, holding on for a 4-3 win over the visiting Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon.
After the White Sox took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, the Tigers pulled ahead with three runs in the sixth against Philip Humber (8-6). Victor Martinez tied the score at 3-3 with a two-run single and scored the go-ahead run when Guillen, activated Saturday after missing the first 93 games with a knee injury, greeted reliever Chris Sale with a base hit to right field.
Brad Penny (7-6) got the win after giving up three runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking one. Three Detroit relievers held the White Sox without a hit the rest of the way, with Jose Valverde working around a leadoff walk in the ninth for his 25th save in as many chances.
Humber lasted 5 2/3 innings in defeat, allowing four runs on seven hits. He finished with eight strikeouts and a walk.
Detroit got on the board in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Brennan Boesch. Chicago got a run-scoring double from Alex Rios and an RBI single from Gordon Beckham in the second.
