Twins 5, Yankees 4 (10 innings)
Joe Mauer finally got his second hit of the season, and the Minnesota Twins finally won their second game at new Yankee Stadium, 5-4 in 10 innings over New York on Tuesday.
Mauer’s RBI single in the extra frame off Boone Logan (0-1) was just his first since Opening Day, but it couldn’t have come at a better time. Minnesota’s one through five hitters went 0 for 14 off CC Sabathia, who struck out seven in seven scoreless, but caught some luck with the bullpen.
Minnesota (2-3) scored four runs in the eighth off Rafael Soriano, who signed a three-year, $35 million deal with the Yankees (3-2) in the offseason. After spotless relief work last week, Soriano lasted just 2/3 of an inning and was pulled after giving up a run on his third walk of the night. Delmon Young then delivered a bloop double with the bases loaded off David Robertson to tie the game.
Brian Duensing was on pace to lose his third straight game to the Yankees. The lefthander allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out seven in seven innings in a pitching rematch of Game 1 of the 2009 American League Division Series.
The Bombers jumped to a 4-0 lead by the second inning for the second straight game due to Mark Teixeira’s third three-run home run and fourth overall in the first. Andruw Jones added a solo shot in the second in his Yankees debut.
Matt Capps (1-0) tossed two hitless innings for the win, while Joe Nathan pitched a perfect 10th for his second save. Minnesota improved to 2-11 all-time at new Yankee Stadium.
