Royals 4, Yankees 3 (11)
The Royals got the most out of their four hits and rallied for a 4-3 road win in 11 innings over the Yankees Wednesday night.
Eric Hosmer’s go-ahead sacrifice fly off Luis Ayala scored Chris Getz in the top of the 11th to give Kansas City its first road win since April 13. Getz led off the inning with a walk off Buddy Carlyle (0-1) — his third in one-plus innings of work. Louis Coleman shut down the side in the bottom half to earn his first save.
Hosmer, a prized prospect who was called up earlier this month, also launched his first career home run and scored a go-ahead run in the 10th inning. The game would have ended there if not for Curtis Granderson’s two-out RBI single that tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half off Joakim Soria (3-0), who earned the victory despite a shaky inning.
Wilson Betemit’s two-out RBI single in the eighth off New York reliever David Robertson tied the game at 2-2, as the Royals won their major league-leading sixth game when trailing entering the eighth inning.
New York’s bullpen collapse erased a solid performance by starter A.J. Burnett, who allowed just one hit and walked five with six strikeouts in seven strong innings. Burnett could have also earned the win if the Yankees went better than 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
Kansas City’s Vin Mazzaro allowed just two earned runs on six hits, including Granderson’s major league-best 12th home run, but only lasted four innings in his first start of the season.
