Yankees 7, Mariners 1

Andruw Jones highlighted a five-run third inning with a bases-clearing double and CC Sabathia tossed eight strong innings as the New York Yankees avoided being swept in their three-game series with the Seattle Mariners by posting a 7-1 road victory on Sunday.

Nick Swisher homered and Curtis Granderson went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Yankees, who have not been swept in Seattle since August 1996.

Sabathia (6-3) limited Seattle to one run and five hits with five strikeouts en route to his fourth consecutive victory overall and sixth in a row vs. the Mariners. The burly lefthander improved to 8-1 lifetime at Safeco Field.

Two batters after Robinson Cano gave New York a 2-0 lead with an RBI single, Jones doubled into the right-field corner with the bases loaded for a five-run cushion. Eduardo Nunez followed with a triple and Mark Teixeira plated a run in the fourth with a single to make it 7-0.

Alex Rodriguez singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to nine games and become the last of the Yankees' nine starters in the lineup to record a hit.

Seattle starter Jason Vargas (3-3) was tagged for six runs in just three innings. The southpaw yielded five hits and four walks in having his three-game winning streak snapped.

Justin Smoak homered and Brendan Ryan stretched his hitting streak to nine games by going 2-for-2 for the Mariners, who lost for just the second time in 11 contests and fell to 7-24 in their last 31 home games against left-handed starters.
