Yankees 7, Royals 4
Derek Jeter had three hits with a triple and three RBIs to lift the visiting New York Yankees to a 7-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.
Leadoff man Brett Gardner added a pair of hits and two RBIs to help struggling righthander A..J. Burnett halt a seven-game winless streak and pull the Yankees into a first-place tie with Boston atop the AL East.
Burnett (9-9) allowed three runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings to pick up his first win since June 29. He also won for the first time in 14 August starts (1-8) since joining New York in 2009.
Mariano Rivera earned his 31st save for the Yankees, who turned double plays in the fourth and fifth innings to bail Burnett out of a pair of jams.
Felipe Paulino (1-5) gave up five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to remain winless since the All-Star break. He is 0-3 in his last six starts.
Melky Cabrera, who extended his hitting streak to eight games, and Billy Butler each had two RBIs for the Royals.
