Athletics 6, Yankees 5
Brandon McCarthy pitched 7 2/3 innings to lead the visiting Oakland Athletics to a 6-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.
Brandon Allen hit a pair of solo home runs and Eric Sogard belted his first major league homer as the Athletics won for the third time in 17 games at Yankee Stadium.
Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was scratched from the lineup due
to a sore thumb. He said he injured it in Sunday's game at Minnesota -
his first game back since undergoing knee surgery on July 11.
Derek Jeter had three hits for New York, which fell into a first-place tie with Boston in the American League East.
McCarthy (7-6) improved to 6-1 in his last eight starts. He blanked
the Yankees for seven innings but surrendered a three-run homer to Nick
Swisher in the eighth that cut Oakland's lead to 6-3.
Andrew Bailey gave up two runs in the ninth, including a solo homer to Jorge Posada, before working out of a bases-loaded jam to secure his 17th save.
Bartolo Colon (8-8) remained winless in four starts, allowing five runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
He was relieved by Boone Logan, who served up a two-run double to pinch-hitter Scott Sizemore to make it 5-0.
