Yankees 3, Mariners 2
Mariano Rivera recorded his 600th career save and moved within one of the all-time record, and A.J. Burnett tossed six strong innings as the New York Yankees posted a 3-2 victory over the host Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.
Robinson Cano drove in a pair of runs and rookie Jesus Montero had two hits and scored a run for New York, which maintained its four-game lead over Boston in the American League East.
Rivera worked a scoreless ninth for his 41st save in 46 chances this season. He is one away from tying Trevor Hoffman for the all-time lead.
Burnett (10-11) allowed two runs and four hits en route to his second victory in 13 outings. The beleaguered righthander, who struck out a season-high 11, reached double digits in wins for the seventh straight year.
Nick Swisher led off the sixth with a double and moved to third on Mark Teixeira's single. Cano, who led off the second with his 26th homer, followed with a grounder that produced an out but allowed Swisher to score and snap a 2-2 tie.
Rookie Charlie Furbush (3-9) yielded three runs over 5 1/3 innings and lost his fifth consecutive start for Seattle, which has dropped 10 of 13.
Ichiro Suzuki, who was caught stealing to end the game, went 1-for-5 and needs 30 hits in his last 14 games to extend his record to 11 straight 200-hit seasons.
