Rays 3, Tigers 2 (10)

Elliot Johnson's fielder’s choice grounder with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning pushed across the winning run as the Tampa Bay Rays edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Wednesday.

Sean Rodriguez beat Ramon Santiago to second base ahead of third baseman Brandon Inge’s throw as Ben Zobrist crossed the plate. Duane Below (0-2) took the loss.

Tampa Bay's Wade Davis allowed four hits and two runs over nine innings to equal the longest outing of his career. He threw only 102 pitches, including 72 strikes.

Evan Longoria had three hits, including his fourth homer in seven games, and Johnny Damon recorded his 2,700th career hit with two doubles as the Rays moved to within 7 1/2 games of the Yankees in the American League wild card race.

Joel Peralta (3-4) pitched a perfect 10th to earn the victory.

Alex Avila tied the game 2-2 with a solo homer in the seventh - his sixth in August - for the Tigers, who had their five-game winning streak snapped but remained six games ahead of Cleveland in the American League Central.

Detroit's Max Scherzer allowed four hits and two runs over five innings, and threw 97 pitches. He had thrown 247 pitches in his previous two outings.
