Reds 2, Blue Jays 1
Bronson Arroyo finally stymied the Toronto lineup and Miguel Cairo had the decisive two-run homer as the Cincinnati Reds edged the visiting Blue Jays 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
Arroyo (6-6) limited Toronto to a run on five hits while walking one and striking out five. The 34-year-old righty came into the game having allowed 24 runs in his previous 7 2/3 innings against the Blue Jays.
His only mistake came on a fifth-inning solo homer from Aaron Hill, his third of the season. It was the 165th home run Arroyo has surrendered since 2006, easily the most in the National League during that span.
Cairo erased the deficit in style in the sixth inning, smashing a first-pitch fastball from Carlos Villanueva (4-1) deep into the left-field seats for his third homer of the campaign.
Francisco Cordero worked a perfect ninth inning for his 15th save.
Villanueva was solid in defeat, surrendering two runs on seven hits during his seven-inning stint. Toronto lost for the first time in six Villanueva starts since he replaced the injured Jesse Litsch in the rotation.
