Blue Jays 5, Cardinals 0
Ricky Romero went the distance on a four-hitter and drove in a pair of runs as the Toronto Blue Jays completed a weekend sweep by blanking the host St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 Sunday afternoon.
Romero (7-7) was in control throughout, walking two and striking out five to record his sixth career complete game, and second shutout. The veteran lefthander has surrendered six runs over his past 32 innings, though he has gone just 2-2 in that span.
He also did some damage with the bat, delivering the key blow in a four-run sixth inning that put the game away. Having entered the game hitless in 12 career at-bats, Romero golfed a single to shallow right field that scored Edwin Encarnacion and Corey Patterson to make it 4-0.
Rookie catcher J.P. Arencibia added his 11th home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning that opened the scoring.
Toronto did all of its damage against Cardinals starter Kyle McClellan (6-4), who fell to 0-3 in his last five starts. The righthander was charged with five runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings.
