Blue Jays 7, Phillies 4
Eric Thames, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion homered in the eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays ended Cliff Lee’s winning streak and avoided a sweep with a 7-4 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.
Rajai Davis added three hits and scored a pair of runs for the Blue Jays, who snapped a three-game slide.
Lee, who allowed only one run in 42 innings in June, had his bid for a fourth consecutive shutout come to an end in the third inning. He was still in line for his sixth consecutive win until the eighth inning.
Having thrown only 89 pitches through seven, Lee came out with the Phillies holding a 4-3 advantage and promptly served up a leadoff home run to Thames.
Bautista followed and got a 2-1 pitch over the inside corner, blasting his 27th home run of the season over the wall in left to give Toronto the lead.
Lee (9-6) stayed in the game and yielded a two-run blast to Encarnacion three batters later before being removed. Lee was charged with seven runs - six earned - and 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings.
Octavio Dotel (2-1) worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win.
