Tigers 2, Pirates 0
Rick Porcello tossed eight innings of one-hit ball as the Detroit Tigers ended a five-game losing skid with a 2-0 win over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon.
Porcello (4-2) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but Ronny Cedeno ended the bid with a sharp double to center field. Porcello issued a one-out walk to Andrew McCutchen but worked his way out of the ensuing jam, inducing an inning-ending double play from Jose Tabata.
Jose Valverde worked around a single and a hit batter in the ninth for his 11th save of the year, ending the Pirates' season-high four-game winning streak.
Casper Wells singled home a run in the second inning and Jhonny Peralta added a solo shot in the fourth, his seventh of the year, to account for the Tigers' offense.
Paul Maholm (1-7) was the hard-luck loser yet again, surrendering both Detroit runs over an otherwise solid 5 2/3 innings. The Pirates have scored a total of 14 runs in his 10 starts this season.
