Tigers 6, Diamondbacks 0
Justin Verlander continued his stellar string of starts with a career-high 14 strikeouts and Alex Avila homered and drove in four runs as the Detroit Tigers blanked the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-0, on Saturday.
Jhonny Peralta added an RBI double and Victor Martinez drove in a run and scored a pair for the Tigers, who won for just the third time in the last eight games.
Verlander (10-3) walked one and yielded four hits in eight innings to join CC Sabathia as the lone 10-game winners in the majors. Verlander has not lost since April 27 and has been dominant over his last six turns, going 6-0 with a 0.90 ERA while pitching at least 7 2/3 innings each time.
Detroit got to Josh Collmenter in the second when Avila sent a two-out double to the gap in right-center, plating Martinez. The Tigers put it away in the fourth, grabbing a second run on Peralta’s double and opening it up when Avila followed with a three-run blast - his 10th of the season.
Collmenter (4-4) has lost his last three starts, lifting his ERA from 1.12 on June 9 to 2.71.
