Tigers 5, Angels 4
Miguel Cabrera capped a three-run seventh inning with a two-run homer, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 road triumph over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday afternoon.
Victor Martinez hit a two-run single and Austin Jackson drew four walks and scored twice for the Tigers, who avoided a three-game sweep in winning for just the third time in nine contests.
Detroit trailed 3-0 after one inning but pulled within one on Martinez's hit in the third. After Andy Dirks' RBI single in the seventh tied the game at 3-3, Michael Kohn relieved Hisanori Takahashi (2-2) and served up Cabrera's 18th homer of the season.
Tigers starter Brad Penny (6-6) yielded four runs in 6 1/3 innings for his first win in six starts. All-Star closer Jose Valverde worked a perfect ninth for his 21st save in as many opportunities this year.
Mark Trumbo belted a solo homer and All-Star Howie Kendrick extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a two-run single in the first for the Angels, who had their four-game winning streak halted and fell to 7-2 on their season-high, 13-game homestand.
