Twins 9, Tigers 6
Minnesota Twins slugger Jim Thome became the eighth player in major history to reach 600 career home runs Monday when he hit a pair in a 9-6 win over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
Thome, 40, hit a two-run homer off starter Rick Porcello (11-8) in the sixth inning. He hit his 600th when he connected for a three-run shot against Daniel Schlereth in the seventh inning.
Thome, who was 3-for-4 with a walk, has 11 home runs this season.
Detroit tallied three home runs, including one by Delmon Young in his first at-bat since being acquired in a trade from the Twins earlier Monday. Ryan Raburn and Victor Martinez also went deep.
Francisco Liriano (8-9) allowed five runs in six innings but still got the win. Joe Nathan pitched the ninth inning and earned his 10th save.
Detroit’s lead in the American Central shrunk to two games over idle Cleveland.
