Twins 6, Tigers 5
Justin Morneau’s, two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning gave the Minnesota Twins a 6-5 victory over the host Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.
Morneau’s hit came against closer Jose Valverde (2-4) and broke a 4-4 tie. The Twins loaded the bases with none out on a single and two infield errors, one by Valverde. After Valverde struck out Trevor Plouffe and Joe Mauer, Morneau delivered a shot up the middle.
Matt Capps (4-6) allowed an inherited run but recorded all three outs in the eighth and Joe Nathan pitched the ninth to earn his 11th save despite allowing a run on Miguel Cabrera’s 80th RBI.
Minnesota’s Jim Thome, who didn’t play Tuesday, hit his 601st career home run and drove in another run with a single in the eighth.
The Tigers saw their lead in the American League Central shrink to two games over the Cleveland Indians.
