Twins 11, Tigers 4
Luke Hughes homered twice and drove in five as the Minnesota Twins snapped a seven-game losing streak and avoided a sweep with an 11-4 triumph over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Jason Kubel hit a two-run homer, and Justin Morneau added three hits and an RBI for the Twins, who exceeded their run total from the previous seven games combined.
After showing no offense all week, Minnesota had little trouble with Tigers starter Brad Penny. Kubel got it started immediately with his 10th blast in the first, and Hughes’ two-run shot in the fourth made it 5-2.
Penny (9-10) ended up getting charged with seven runs and eight hits in five innings. Ramon Santiago went 4-for-4 and drove in half of Detroit's runs.
Hughes put it out of reach in the seventh with a three-run blast off David Pauley. Hughes has been on a tear the last two days, totaling three homers and eight RBIs.
Brian Duensing (9-13) allowed three earned runs in six innings to pick up the win and end his five-start losing streak.
Detroit leads the American League Central by six games over Chicago.
