Marlins 5, Athletics 4
Chris Volstad threw seven superb innings and Hanley Ramirez drove in a pair of runs Thursday, helping the visiting Florida Marlins wrap up the worst month in franchise history with second straight win, 5-4 over the Oakland Athletics.
Logan Morrison and former A’s catcher John Buck each drove in two runs for the Marlins, who finished June 5-23 - by far their worst month in franchise history.
Volstad (4-7) allowed just an unearned run for his second straight win. The righthander’ s strong performance and a four-run fifth inning propelled Florida to its first winning streak since a three-game sweep of San Francisco from May 24-26.
Florida sent nine hitters to the plate in the fifth against Trevor Cahill (8-6) and led 5-1 after seven innings, but it wasn't easy. Nothing has been for the Marlins this month.
Coco Crisp and Kurt Suzuki each homered for Oakland, ending the A’s franchise-record stretch of 32 straight games without multiple home runs. Suzuki’s two-run homer in the ninth cut the lead to 5-4, but Leo Nunez finished it off for his 22nd save in 25 chances.
Cahill had his five-game interleague winning streak snapped. The righthander allowed five runs – four earned - and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.
