Padres 4, Marlins 3

Will Venable's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth helped San Diego cap off a season sweep of Florida with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Nick Hundley led off the decisive frame with a triple to center field against Edward Mujica (8-5), who then intentionally walked Logan Forsythe and Alberto Gonzalez to load the bases. Mike Dunn came on to face Venable, who lofted a 0-1 pitch over the head of Florida right fielder Mike Stanton to end the game.

Mike Cameron's two-out solo home run to left field against Heath Bell tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth, but the Marlins failed to plate the go-ahead run after following Cameron's homer with two hits and a walk to load the bases.

The Padres opened up a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Florida starter Anibal Sanchez. Venable led off with a home run and Kyle Blanks added a two-out, two-run double. Stanton got the Marlins on the board in the fourth inning with his 30th home run of the year, a solo shot to left field against Cory Luebke.

John Buck cut the San Diego lead to one with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

Luebke struck out eight over six strong innings for the Padres, allowing just one run on three hits. Sanchez allowed three runs on six hits in five innings, striking out three and walking two.

The start of the game was delayed for a ceremony in which the Padres retired the number of former closer Trevor Hoffman.
