Phillies 10, Mets 7
Ryan Howard went 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to help the Philadelphia Phillies win a 10-7 slugfest over the visiting New York Mets on Wednesday night.
Ben Francisco also homered, Placido Polanco had three hits and three RBIs, and pitcher Joe Blanton added a two-run single to pace a 16-hit attack for Philadelphia.
Angel Pagan belted a two-run homer and Ike Davis had a two-run double for the Mets, who erased an early 7-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth and five in the fifth.
Antonio Bastardo (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win and Jose Contreras got his first save. Blaine Boyer (0-1) took the loss.
Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision. New York’s Mike Pelfrey lasted two-plus innings and allowed seven runs – six earned – on eight hits.
Blanton was unable to protect the 7-0 bulge and was charged with seven runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Howard clubbed a pair of doubles and an RBI infield single to go along with his homer. David Wright and Carlos Beltran had run-scoring singles for New York.
