Mets 9, Astros 1
Jason Bay’s debut was supposed to re-energize the struggling New York Mets, but their starting pitcher filled that role instead.
Chris Capuano went seven strong innings and New York salvaged the final game of a series with a 9-1 victory over the visiting Houston Astros on Thursday night.
Capuano (2-1) allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out four for the Mets (6-13), who snapped a seven-game home losing streak.
It was a much needed quality start for New York, which entered the game tied last in the majors in rotational wins and second-to-last in rotational ERA. Taylor Buccholz threw two scoreless innings of relief to seal the win.
Bay went 1-for-4 with two runs scored in his return from a rib injury, while David Wright cracked a home run for his first hit in 25 at-bats.
J.A. Happ (1-3) allowed six earned runs on six hits and threw 109 pitches in 4 2/3 innings for the Astros (7-12), who still took their first series of the season.
