Angels 7, Mets 3
Tyler Chatwood pitched seven scoreless innings and Vernon Wells homered and had three RBIs as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim topped the host New York Mets, 7-3, on Sunday.
Erick Aybar added a three-run triple and Jeff Mathis chipped in a solo blast for the Angels, who improved to 4-2 at the midway point of their 12-game road trip.
Chatwood (4-4) yielded just four hits, while walking four and striking out four to snap a two-start losing streak. The rookie righthander, who also recorded his first major league hit on Sunday, has allowed one or no runs six times already this season to cement his place in the back of the Los Angeles rotation.
Wells got the Angels on the board right away, singling in a run in the first off Jonathon Niese. Aybar broke it open in the following inning, coming up with the bases loaded and shooting a hard line drive down the first base line to clear the bases.
Niese (6-6) lasted four-plus innings, surrendering five runs - four earned - on eight hits to suffer his first loss since May 24.
New York avoided a shut out with three runs in the ninth.
