Phillies 9, Mets 4
Hunter Pence had three hits and knocked in three runs, and Roy Halladay pitched six shutout innings as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies cruised to a 9-4 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.
Carlos Ruiz added four singles and two RBIs as the Phillies snapped a season-high, eight-game losing streak. Philadelphia has not lost nine straight since 1999.
Halladay (19-6) allowed four hits and improved to 7-0 against the Mets since coming to Philadelphia. Halladay became the first Phillies’ pitcher since Steve Carlton to win 40 games in a two-year period. Carlton had 42 wins in 1979-80.
Pence belted a two-run homer in the first and singled in another in a four-run fourth as the Phillies built a 9-0 lead. Jimmy Rollins added three hits and scored two runs. It was the second straight three-hit game for Rollins after going 0-for-16 his previous five.
The Phillies had averaged two runs during their eight-game losing streak before breaking out Sunday.
Jason Pridie had a single, double and triple for the Mets, and Ronny Paulino added a two-run homer.
New York starter Mike Pelfrey (7-13) gave up nine hits and five runs in three innings. The 13 losses are the most in Pelfrey’s career.
