Phillies 3, Padres 0

Roy Oswalt allowed just one hit and struck out seven over six innings to lead the visiting Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

Ben Francisco and Brian Schneider blasted solo home runs in the second inning to give the Phillies an early lead against Padres starter Mat Latos (0-3), who tied a career high with five walks. He was pulled after throwing 107 pitches in 4 1/3 innings.

Latos, who allowed three runs and four hits with seven strikeouts, has yielded five home runs in his first 16 2/3 innings this season.

Oswalt improved to 3-0 after throwing 106 pitches before giving way to relievers Daniel Herndon, Antonio Bastardo and Jose Contreras, who worked around two base runners in the ninth inning before recording his fifth save.

The Padres, who managed just three hits, loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with a single and two walks, but Bastardo retired Alberto Gonzalez with a fly ball to right to end the threat.

Ryan Howard went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts, and he’s now 0-for-8 with eight strikeouts against Latos.
