Phillies 2, Padres 0
Cole Hamels continued his dominance at Petco Park with eight strong innings and the visiting Philadelphia Phillies blanked the San Diego Padres for the second straight game with a 2-0 victory Friday.
Ryan Howard gave the Phillies all the runs they would need with a two-run triple in the third inning off Clayton Richard (1-1), who allowed two runs on six hits and four walks in 7 1/3 innings.
Howard, who went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts on Thursday, improved his average to .278 after going 2-for-4.
Hamels (2-1) entered the game with a 1.57 ERA in four starts at Petco Park, and he was sharp again Friday. He struck out eight and gave up just four hits and three walks on 126 pitches.
With closer Jose Contreras unavailable after working five of the past seven days, Ryan Madson retired the side in the ninth for his first save.
The Padres have not scored in their last 21 innings and have been shut out a major league-leading six times. San Diego has managed just four hits in each of the first two games of the series.
