Phillies 3, Padres 1
Cole Hamels scattered three hits over eight innings and John Mayberry
Jr. had an RBI double as the Philadelphia Phillies posted a 3-1 home
triumph over the San Diego Padres on Friday.
Chase Utley had a pair of hits, and Shane Victorino scored twice - both
by unconventional means - to fuel Philadelphia to its 17th win in 25
games.
Victorino opened the scoring in the second after center fielder
Cameron Maybin committed a fielding error. He doubled the advantage in
the fourth after being awarded home following a balk by starter Cory
Luebke (3-4).
Hamels (12-5), a San Diego native, posted his second victory this season
and sixth in eight career decisions against his hometown Padres. He
allowed one run and struck out 10 - including seven of the first nine
batters.
Ryan Madson retired the side in order in the ninth for his 16th save.
Luebke permitted three runs on six hits in five innings for San Diego, which was thwarted in trying to reach a season-best fourth
win in a row.
