Royals 5, Angels 4
Chris Getz had three hits, including a tiebreaking single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the host Kansas City Royals rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday afternoon.
Matt Treanor tied the score with a run-scoring single immediately prior to Getz’s base hit to center field off Kevin Jepsen (0-1). Pinch runner Jarrod Dyson easily scored from second base.
Aaron Crow (1-0) picked up the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the
Royals, who are 2-1 against the Angels in the season-opening series that
concludes Sunday. Joakim Soria worked a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.
Torii Hunter hit a one-out homer in the fourth off Kansas City starter Kyle Davies to give the Angels a 1-0 lead. Kansas City scored twice in the fifth on Getz’s run-scoring single and an infield groundout by Alcides Escobar.
The Angels tied the score in the sixth on Vernon Wells’ RBI-single. Alberto Callaspo followed with a single to give the Angels the 3-2 lead. Wells scored later in the inning on Erick Aybar’s infield out.
Kansas City pulled within a run when Angels starter Ervin Santana threw a wild pitch while striking out Jeff Francoeur in the seventh, allowing Billy Butler to score.
Santana pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up three runs and seven hits. He struck out six and walked two. Davies gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
