A's 3, Royals 2

The Oakland Athletics rallied from an early deficit with three runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over the host Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

A solo home run from Alex Gordon gave the Royals a 1-0 lead in the first, and Mike Aviles added an RBI triple in the first against A's starter Gio Gonzalez (4-2).

Oakland got on the board in the fifth with an RBI single by Andy LaRoche and took the advantage when Kevin Kouzmanoff and Coco Crisp each drove in runs on fielder's choices.

Gonzalez worked seven innings for the win, scattering four hits and four walks while striking out six. Grant Balfour and Brian Fuentes held Kansas City scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with Fuentes recording his eighth save.

Sean O'Sullivan (1-2) took the loss despite allowing just five hits and one walk in eight innings. Rookie first baseman Eric Hosmer walked twice and struck out twice in his much-anticipated major league debut.
