Royals 2, Angels 0: Butler's walk-off homer lifts KC
Billy Butler’s ninth-inning homer, not confirmed until video review, gave the host Royals a 2-0 win in the rubber game of their series with the Angels on Wednesday afternoon.
Jeff Francoeur singled with one out in the ninth off Scott Downs, and Butler followed with the game-winner. The ball hit behind the outfield padding, bounced back into play and initially was ruled a double. Video showed it was a home run.
Five Royals pitchers combined for the shutout, with newly acquired Felipe Paulino going five innings before giving way to a dominant Greg Holland. Holland struck out six in 2 2/3 innings.
The Angels wasted a sterling outing from rookie Tyler Chatwood, who allowed five hits over 7 2/3 scoreless innings.
The teams hit into two double plays apiece, and there were no extra-base hits until Bobby Abreu’s eighth-inning double, the 536th of his career. He trails only Todd Helton (538) and Ivan Rodriguez (569) among active players.
The Angels finished their road trip 3-3 and headed west for a nine-game homestand starting Friday.
