Cubs 6, Royals 4
A costly ninth-inning error helped the Chicago Cubs to rally to a 6-4 victory over the host Kansas City Royals on Friday night.
After tying the game in the seventh inning, Chicago took over in the top of the ninth against Aaron Crow (2-1).
The Cubs collected consecutive one-out singles from Tony Campana and D.J. LeMahieu before an miscue by second baseman Chris Getz allowed Campana to score the go-ahead run. Starlin Castro followed with an RBI single to give Chicago a two-run lead.
Carlos Marmol gave up a leadoff walk and a double in the ninth inning but held on to record the save. Sean Marshall (4-2) retired the side in order in the eighth to pick up the win.
Kansas City starter Bruce Chen worked six innings in his first outing since May 5, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Jeff Francoeur hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Melky Cabrera added an RBI base hit to give the Royals a 4-3 lead.
Ryan Dempster allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings for Chicago. Four relievers combined to hold Kansas City to one hit over the final three innings.
