Royals 6, Cubs 3

Kansas City scored four first-inning runs and held on for a 6-3 home victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon.

The Royals went to work early against Randy Wells (1-2), getting consecutive RBI hits from Billy Butler, Alex Gordon and Jeff Francoeur. Geovany Soto led the Cubs back to within one on a solo homer in the third inning and an RBI double in the fourth, but Kansas City stretched the margin back to three with RBI singles by Chris Getz and Eric Hosmer in the bottom of the fourth.

Luke Hochevar (5-8) worked 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five. Relievers Louis Coleman, Tim Collins, Aaron Crow and Joakim Soria combined to hold the Cubs to one hit the rest of the way.

Wells gave up six runs and 10 hits in six innings. Chris Carpenter worked out of a bases-loaded jam without allowing a run in the eighth to give the Cubs a chance, but Soria was able to close the door in the ninth for his 13th save.
