Cubs 1, Brewers 0

Darwin Barney scored the game's only run on a tight play at the plate in the eighth inning as the Chicago Cubs pulled out a 1-0 home win over Milwaukee on Monday night. The loss dropped the Brewers back into a first-place tie with St. Louis atop the National League Central.

After starting pitchers Randy Wolf and Ryan Dempster dueled through seven scoreless innings, the Cubs broke through in the eighth against reliever Kameron Loe (2-6). Barney delivered a one-out single and advanced to third when pinch hitter Carlos Peña doubled off the ivy in left field. Barney then came home on a soft grounder up the middle by Aramis Ramirez, diving headfirst just under the tag of Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy.

Carlos Marmol worked around a two-out walk in the ninth inning to save it for Jeff Samardzija (4-2), who pitched a perfect eighth. Dempster surrendered just four hits and a walk for Chicago, striking out seven.

Wolf also finished with seven strikeouts while giving up six hits for the Brewers.
