Nationals 3, Cubs 1
Chien-Ming Wang pitched six shutout innings for his first win in more than two years as the Washington Nationals posted a 3-1 victory over the host Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
Wang (1-2) struck out one and walked two, and held the Cubs without a hit until the sixth inning, when pinch-hitter Tony Campana led off with an infield single. Wang threw a season-high 81 pitches en route to his first victory since June 28, 2009, when he was with the New York Yankees.
Michael Morse put the Nationals in front to stay with a one-out solo home run to center in the sixth against Matt Garza (5-9). After Jayson Werth followed with a single, Jonny Gomes made it 3-0 when he delivered a two-run homer to left-center field. Garza struck out nine, and allowed three runs and six hits over six innings.
Chicago avoided the shutout when Starlin Castro hit a solo homer in the eighth against Tyler Clippard. The Cubs brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Drew Storen got Alfonso Soriano to fly out to shallow center for the final out and his 30th save.
Washington's Ryan Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a single in the first.
