Bud Norris pitched six scoreless innings and Michael Bourn singled home the game's only run as the Houston Astros edged the visiting San Diego Padres 1-0 on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.
Norris (1-1), who entered with an 8.10 ERA, allowed two hits while striking out seven and walking three in six innings.
Mark Melancon worked 1 2/3 innings before closer Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect the ninth for his second save to complete Houston's first shutout of the year.
The Astros broke a scoreless deadlock in the sixth when Humberto Quintero singled, was sacrificed to second by Norris and scored on Bourn's single to center.
Padres starter Dustin Moseley had his third straight solid outing, allowing one run on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, but he remained winless despite lowering his ERA to 1.83.
San Diego second baseman Orlando Hudson went 1-for-2 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He has reached safely in all 12 games this season.
