Diamondbacks 6, Astros 3
Josh Collmenter pitched seven strong innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks moved into first place in the National League West with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Houston Astros on Wednesday.
Collmenter (7-7) gave up two runs and four hits as Arizona defeated Houston for the second straight night and moved a half-game ahead of the San Francisco Giants.
Justin Upton had three hits and Paul Goldschmidt had a two-run single for the Diamondbacks.
Houston’s Henry Sosa (0-1) made his major-league debut and Arizona’s Willie Bloomquist greeted him with a leadoff homer in the first. Goldschmidt singled home two later in the inning.
Clint Barmes and Humberto Quintero each had run-scoring singles in the fifth for the Astros. Houston loaded the bases in the eighth, but scored only one run on Carlos Lee’s infield out.
Chris Young had a run-scoring double and Kelly Johnson tripled home a run for Arizona.
David Hernandez picked up his 10th save by working a perfect ninth.
Collmenter struck out five and walked one while rebounding from back-to-back shaky outings. Collmenter allowed 11 earned runs and 15 hits in six innings over his last two starts.
Sosa allowed four runs and six hits in six innings.
