Padres 11, Cardinals 3
Visiting San Diego erupted for six runs in the fifth to break a 3-3 tie, and went on to beat flailing St. Louis, 11-3 Saturday.
Chase Headley had a two-run single in the big inning to chase Cards starter Jake Westbrook, who allowed eight runs and six hits with five walks in 4 1/3 innings. Cameron Maybin followed with a run-scoring double off Jason Motte.
Headley added a two-run homer in the ninth.
Clayton Richard pitched six innings of five-hit ball, allowing three runs for the win. He also drove in two runs with a sacrifice bunt and a bases-loaded walk.
The Cardinals played without cleanup hitter Matt Holliday, who had an emergency appendectomy Friday. Albert Pujols, who went 0-for-5 and grounded into three double plays in Thursday’s opener, hit a solo shot in the third and finished 2-for-4.
St. Louis will try to avoid an 0-3 start in Sunday's series finale.
