Cardinals 2, Padres 0
St. Louis needed a dominant performance after its 0-2 start, and Jaime Garcia delivered.
The 24-year-old lefthander tossed a four-hitter as the host Cardinals salvaged the series finale with a 2-0 win over the San Diego Padres. Garcia struck out nine, walked two and needed only 102 pitches to dispatch the Padres and post his second career complete game and shutout.
Garcia allowed two runners to reach second base through the first five and worked out of his biggest jam in the sixth when the first two batters singled. But Garcia got a groundout and escaped when former Cardinal Ryan Ludwick lined into a double play to third.
Yadier Molina's single in the fifth off Dustin Moseley scored Lance Berkman, giving Garcia the only offense he'd need. St. Louis got an insurance run in the eighth when Ryan Theriot singled in Skip Schumaker, who had led off with a single.
The Cards overcame an 0-for-4 performance by Albert Pujols.
The Padres wasted a strong effort from Moseley, who allowed four hits and one unearned run over seven innings.
