Cardinals 6, Giants 1
Kyle Lohse pitched eight strong innings and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals broke out of their early offensive doldrums with a 6-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
Lohse (1-1) allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks against the Giants, who won the first two games of the series in their last at-bat.
David Freese finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Trever Miller pitched the ninth for the Cardinals, who ended a three-game losing streak.
St. Louis left fielder Matt Holliday, who missed seven games while recovering from an appendectomy on April 1, went 1-for-3 in his return with two walks.
The game was tied at 1-1 until the sixth when Giants starter Barry Zito (0-1) walked two and Freese and Skip Schumaker followed with back-to-back doubles.
The Cardinals, who entered Sunday’s action last in the league in runs scored with 21 over eight games, tallied 11 hits against the Giants. However, Albert Pujols’ early-season struggles continued after going 0-for-5 to drop his average to .143.
