Padres 3, Cardinals 1
Chase Headley's RBI double to deep left snapped a tie with two outs in the eighth inning to lift the host San Diego Padres to a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
Headley's big hit scored Jason Bartlett, who had bunted for a hit.
Mat Latos (2-6) tossed eight brilliant innings for the win, striking out seven and allowing six hits. Heath Bell earned his 10th save by pitching a flawless ninth.
Chris Carpenter (1-5) took the loss for the Cardinals, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
The Padres snapped a five-game skid in which they had scored a total of five runs. San Diego improved to just 9-20 at Petco Park.
One day after breaking his home run drought, slugger Albert Pujols went 0-for-4 to drop his average to .261 on the season.
