Cardinals 8, Reds 1
Matt Holliday hit two home runs and Lance Berkman crushed the longest measured homer in Busch Stadium history as the host St. Louis Cardinals whipped the Cincinnati Reds 8-1 on Tuesday night.
Berkman’s 452-foot blast to right was his 350th career homer.
The first-place Cardinals clinched the series win over the Reds and improved to 12-0-1 in home series against Cincinnati since 2006.
Holliday lined a fastball over the left field fence and Berkman turned on the next pitch for his historic homer in the first inning off Edinson Volquez (5-4). It was 2-1 in the fifth when Holliday broke the game open with a three-run shot to center.
That was more than enough for lefthander Jaime Garcia (8-3), who allowed two hits and one run over six innings.
Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, who broke his wrist June 19, was activated before the game a month ahead of schedule, but did not play.
Holliday’s big night came shortly after he was chosen to compete in the Home Run Derby on Monday.
