Pirates 5, Cardinals 4 (11)

Garrett Jones hit a home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Jones' blast off Arthur Rhodes (0-1) cleared the right field fence, bounced once and splashed into the Allegheny River for his second career walk-off homer.

St. Louis' Albert Pujols hit his National League-leading 30th home run in the sixth to extend his own major record of 11 straight seasons to start a career with 30 or more homers. It was also Pujols' 28th career homer at PNC Park, the most by a visiting player.

Matt Holliday's sacrifice fly off closer Joel Hanrahan put the Cardinals ahead 4-3 in the ninth before Neil Walker tied it with a leadoff homer off closer Fernando Salas in the bottom half.

Chris Resop (4-4) pitched the 10th and 11th.

The Pirates grabbed a 3-1 lead in the third on Andrew McCutchen’s three-run homer before the Cardinals tied it in the sixth on Pujols’ shot and David Freese’s RBI double.

The Cardinals fell seven games behind Milwaukee in the National League Central and seven behind Atlanta in the wild card race.

Pirates left fielder Jose Tabata, who had been out since June 27 with a strained quadriceps, returned and went 1-for-4 with a walk. He has hit safely in all 16 career games against the Cardinals.
