Pirates 7, Padres 4
Ryan Doumit hit a grand slam and Kevin Correia pitched six solid innings against his former team as the Pittsburgh Pirates posted a 7-4 road victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.
Doumit’s blast in the third inning off Padres starter Clayton Richard was his second of the season and propelled Pittsburgh to a series win, its fifth on the road this season. Pittsburgh won four all of last season.
Neil Walker added a two-run singe during the six-run uprising in the third as Pittsburgh jumped to an early 7-0 lead. The Pirates took advantage of errors by catcher Nick Hundley and third baseman Chase Headley.
Correia (5-2), a mainstay in the San Diego rotation last season, allowed two runs and five hits with two walks and three strikeouts to improve to 5-0, with a 1.55 ERA on the road. He was 10-10 with a 5.40 ERA with San Diego last season.
Richard (1-3) was charged with all seven runs but just one earned on four hits in five frames.
Brad Hawpe and Eric Patterson each homered in the ninth for San Diego.
