Padres 15, Pirates 5
Chase Headley hit his first career grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the San Diego Padres' rare offensive outburst in a 15-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at PNC Park.
The Padres entered the game ranked last in the National League in runs (388) and home runs (58), but they set season-highs for both Friday.
Headley's grand slam — his fourth homer of the season — capped a six-run fourth inning. Kris Blanks and Aaron Cunningham each added their first homers of the season for San Diego, a pair of solo shots, and Jesus Guzman hit a two-run blast in the eighth.
The Pirates have lost eight straight and 10 of 11 since they were tied for the NL Central lead on July 25.
The Padres have won seven straight in Pittsburgh, outscoring the Pirates 52-20 during that stretch.
San Diego starter Aaron Harang (10-3) won for the sixth time in seven decisions despite allowing a season-high 13 hits over five innings.
Pirates starter Jeff Karstens (8-6) was dinged for nine runs in 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. Pittsburgh has lost his last four outings.
Ryan Ludwick, who was traded from San Diego to Pittsburgh on Sunday, went 4-for-4 against his former team.
