Nationals 4, Diamondbacks 1
Jayson Werth hit a three-run homer and Ross Detwiler pitched 6 2/3 strong innings as the Washington Nationals handed the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks their sixth straight loss 4-1 on Monday.
The Diamondbacks, who have scored seven runs during the slide, saw their lead in the National League West shrink to one game over the idle San Francisco Giants.
Detwiler (2-3) allowed one run and six hits. He had lost all three previous starts since entering the rotation Aug. 4. Drew Storen pitched a perfect ninth for his 34th save.
Werth drove a 1-1 pitch from Joe Saunders (8-11) into the right field seats in the fourth to give Washington a 4-0 lead.
Ryan Zimmerman reached base for the 28th straight game with an infield hit prior to Werth’s blast. Zimmerman has also hit in 27 of his last 28 games.
Jonny Gomes’ RBI single followed Werth’s one-out double in the second to make it 1-0.
Saunders, who lost his third straight decision, allowed four runs and six hits in six innings.
Henry Blanco homered in the seventh for Arizona.
